River search launched for teenage girl

A SEARCH operation got underway for a teenage girl who fell into the River Shannon this afternoon.

It is understood the girl was seen entering the water near Sarsfield Bridge close to 2.30pm.

Local gardai and the Valentia Coastguard were alerted as a search and rescue operation began for the 17-year-old.

The air-sea rescue helicopter, Garda divers along with local marine rescue teams joined the emergency services in the search.

The Gardai have identified the girl but they say they are not releasing her name at this stage.
