Arts news in brief

Cultural shows for Limerick and Quimper
TO celebrate the 30th anniversary of the twinning between Limerick and Quimper, and to foster cultural relations between the two cities,  submissions are invited from artists in any medium to take part in a cross-cultural exhibition in both cities. The artists who apply should be living, studying or working in Limerick.

The first exhibition will take place here from Tuesday November 1 this year for three days. Artists from both cities will contribute to this show.
The corresponding exhibition in Quimper will be from Tuesday November 8 for three days. Selected artists will be encouraged to travel to Quimper as a group and stay for the duration of the exhibition. Travel itinerary and costs to be confirmed later.
Submissions along with artist statement should be emailed to richard.williams@lit.ie by August 26.

Summer Book Bus for Newport
BACK by popular demand, the Summer Book Bus pulls into Newport during the months of July and August. Building on the success of last year’s Book Bus and Summer Reading Tree programme. Tipperary Libraries will have their mobile children’s library parked outside the community centre in Newport every Wednesday from 10am – 1pm and 2pm – 4.30pm as of next Wednesday July 6.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to keep children reading during the Summer months,” comments assistant librarian Margaret Ryan. “Remember kids – all you have to read is eight books during the holidays and you get your medal! So come along Wednesday July 6 and be there with us from the start”.

World Listening Day 2011

EVERYONE is invited to participate in a soundwalk in Limerick city to mark World Listening Day on Monday July 18.
If possible, bring your portable/ mobile sound recording device (e.g. mobile phone, MP3 recorder, etc). If not, just bring yourself, we’re told.
“The issue we’d like to explore is the subjective and objective aspects of listening to our everyday environments and soundscapes.
“In addition to the soundwalk, listening and recording, the Grand Finale will be a performance, by all the participants, using the collected sounds as an ensemble. If, for any reason, you didn’t bring a recorder then you can vocalise the recollection of your sonic experience”.
So to take part, be at The Locke Bar on George’s Quay at 12noon on Monday 18. There are more details and a route map at www.softday.ie/wld2011/
It is a good idea to declare your intentions in advance at email info@softday.ie to let the organisers get an idea of numbers for World Listening Day.
