Elderly man conned in distraction theft

A DISTRACTION theft took place in Farranshone recently, which involved a considerable amount of cash stolen from an elderly resident. The gentleman, who lives alone, answered the door to a man on Friday January 20, and who claimed to be calling to fix a water leak in the house next door. The conman was allowed inside and led the resident to the back. While he did this, a second man entered the house and stole a considerable sum of cash, made up of €50 notes, from the bedroom.

The owner did not discover that the cash was missing until after the culprits had left.
The thief who met with the victim is described as about 5’9” in height, thin build and was wearing dark clothing.
He is believed to be about 50 years of age and had a country accent.
“This type of distraction burglary is all too common”, said Sergeant Brian Broderick.
“There was a similar incident at a house in Croagh recently where the thief posed as an ESB official and demanded a sum of money.
“The thieves generally target older, vulnerable people who live alone.
“I would always advise householders not to open their door to anyone unless they are sure who is at the door”.
