Brothers appear in court over McMahon murder

TWO brothers have appeared at Limerick District Court in connection with the murder of 43-year-old Gerard McMahon at Lenihan Avenue in Prospect on January 18 last.

26-year-old Sean Flanagan with an address of 105 Lenihan Avenue, is charged with the alleged murder of Gerard McMahon at 85 Lenihan Avenue on January 18 last contrary to common law.

Detective Garda Michael Murphy told the court of arresting, charging and cautioning the accused at 11.45pm at Roxboro Garda Station on January 26 last. The accused made no reply and was remanded in custody after John Devane, solicitor, was appointed as legal aid. Sean Flanagan will appear again in court via video link next Tuesday.

22-year-old Ian Flanagan with an address also at 105 Lenihan Avenue, is charged with allegedly impeding the apprehension of a person knowing to be guilty of an arrestable offence at 105 Lenihan Avenue on January 18 last. Detective Garda Deirdre Foley told the court that she arrested, charged and cautioned the accused man at 11.25 on January 26 last.

The charge is contrary to section 7 (2) and (4) of the Criminal Law Act 1997. The accused man no reply and was remanded in custody after John Devane was also appointed as legal aid. Ian Flanagan will also appear again in court via video link next Tuesday when an application for bail would be made.
