Jorg Widmann leads Irish Chamber orchestra

The ICO’s new principal guest conductor, Jörg Widmann is one of the world’s leading clarinettists. Widmann is also Professor of Clarinet at the Conservatoire in Frieburg and a successful composer in his own right. One Thursday 19 at the concert hall, 8pm, he leads a programme of Mendelssohn, Mozart and two of his own works, with violinist Katherine Hunka.

Widmann has already written more than some composers manage in a lifetime – operas, huge orchestral works and some of the most distinctive chamber music around, including his five string quartets.   With small or large instrumental forces, Widmann’s work retains a certain power.    He has received many prestigious awards including the Arnold Schoenberg Prize of the Vienna Schoenberg Centre and the Claudio Abbado Composition Award.
Concert goers might consider supper first at Plassey House, 6pm as part of the Friends of the Irish Chamber Orchestra ‘Meet the Musician’ series. This week viola player Lisa Grosman of Sing Out with Strings will serenade and talk to the party. See www.irishchamberorchestra.com
