Out to lunch with ‘The Candidate’

THEATRE nights are standard for some and a distant call for others. The barriers can be childcare, finance, the commute or plain not giving a fiddler’s. So any one for a light lunch in a top class restaurant, and a stage show too? Pencil out the last Thursday and Friday of each month for an hour in The Savoy Hotel, Henry Street because ‘Lunchtime Theatre at The Savoy’ is beginning. Attend to ‘The Candidate’ this Thursday April 26 and Friday 27 at 12.45pm in The Market Restaurant of The Savoy. Soup and a sandwich will be served, all for a tenner.

‘The Candidate’ is the first in a Spring/ Summer series of short plays, lasting 40 to 50 minutes and with subject matter weighted for midday.
One of the organisers is Meave McGrath whose theatre company Sídhe is shared with Sinead Vaughan. Colm O’Briain, who brought lunchtime theatre to Bewley’s in Limerick and in Dublin, is the third wheel in securing this season.
“Our own company Sídhe had a show, ‘The Candidate’ written and directed by Gina Moxley, ready to go,” explains McGrath. “We did it last year in The Belltable and it was successful. ‘The Candidate’ is a one woman comedy with actress Frances Healy playing a woman who goes away on holiday. Meeting a local TD there, she has a full blown romance with him”.
Does she luck out or limp home? Find out in this red, velvety restaurant as you spoon good soup and not a TD.
Meave McGrath is one of the founding members of Limerick Local Heroes, of whom business man Colm O’Briain is a member. Sídhe Theatre Company and he are caretakers of this theatrical slot in The Savoy and are looking to other counties, producers for interested plays and shows. ‘Lunchtime Theatre at The Savoy’ runs April 26 and 27, May 24 and 25 and June 28 and 29, 12.45pm.
