Casta Diva – the life loves and music of Maria Callas

UCH welcomes Jablokov again on Friday November 9 for his ensemble’s orchestration for ‘Casta Diva – the Life, Loves and Music of Maria Callas’. Produced by Niall Morris and Pat Egan, this will star Limerick’s own Mairead Buike as Callas, with tenor James Edwards and baritone Simon Morgan cast as the men in her life. Heartscalded and here

THE youngest of the McCourt brothers and the irascible one, Alphie Mc Court has a new book out, ‘Heartscald’. ‘Heartscald’ is a collectin of verses, songs and chronicles and it will be launched on Saturday November 3 in The Frank McCourt Museum, Hartstonge Street at 3.30pm by Granny’s Intentions musician, Jack Costelloe.

Having immigrated to the US in 1959, Alphie now living in Canada with his family. He’ll be back to his home place of the 1940s on Saturday 3 for the book launch, fostered by Limerick Writers Centre. ‘Heartscald’ recalls “his early life in Limerick and his subsequent life in America.  Heart-warming, funny and sad, and told with wit and a certain amount of self-deprecation, it is a poetic chronicle filled with wry comment and philosophical observation”.

‘Darkness on the edge of town’

UNFRINGED ’12 festival of arts continues with shows in The Loft, Savoy Hotel, LCGA in Pery Square and of course, Belltable Arts Centre. Look to Savoy Lunchtime Theatre at 1pm this Thursday 25, Friday 26 for ‘Payback’, a hit at Dublin’s fringe festival. On these same dates, producers Meave McGrath, Colm O’Brien and Pius McGrath are also backing  Tea Time Theatre slot at 6.30pm with Sonya Kelly’s ‘The Wheelchair on my Face’.  This show took Fringe First at Edinburgh this year.

Art in the Park

ART on the Park is now up and open to admiring footfall every Sunday up to the Georgian Market weekend in Pery Square on November 25.

At least 20 artists displayed their work at the initial event with a total of over 120 pieces covering most styles and mediums including oil, acrylics, watercolour, pen and ink. The range of studies embraces still life, portrait, landscape and local interest themes.

This show on the Sabbath is co-ordinated by Patricia Roberts of No. 1 Pery Square Hotel and Spa, and Limerick Art Society.
