Eagles and Huskies Win

DEFENDING Mens Super League champions UL Eagles got themselves back to winning ways over the weekend with a convincing 73 to 61 win over UCD Marian in Dublin.
A strong performance by veteran campaigner Rob Lynch, who scored 22 points in the contest, helped Eagles get the much needed win a week after losing to table toppers UCC Demons at home.

Head coach Mark Keenan was deservedly proud of his players after the game, singling out the team’s commitment to winning for special praise.
“I was delighted with our effort and the whole performance,” he said.
“We really turned up the defensive pressure in the fourth quarter. It was a tight enough game but we felt like if we kept at it we would wear down them down eventually. And that is what we did in the end.”
In the Nivea Women’s Superleague, while UL Huskies Basketball Club were stretching their impressive winning streak with a convincing win over WIT Wildcats in Limerick, Killester and Singleton, SuperValu Brunell were playing out a classic in Dublin.
Mimi Clarke became the hero when she netted a last second free throw to earn Killester a one point win. Afterwards a relieved Killester coach Mark Grennell was thankful that his team was able to get stops when needed them.
“We got three stops in a row down the stretch. They only drew level at the death when we made a mistake on a screen and left them wide open. We were able to get down the court and drove it hard to ring which gave us the free throw to win,” said Grennell.
Despite the tough loss, Brunell recovered in time to record a win the following day against Meteors of Dublin, who had a horrid weekend, losing also on Saturday to Ulster Rockets.
The Eagles are at home this weekend. They face Dublin Inter at University Arena at 7.30pm on Saturday November 3. The next game for the UL Huskies is on November 17 in UL at 5pm.
