A NEW music network teaching residency for people aged 60 and over is kicking off in Limerick.
Making Music in Limerick is getting underway, in partnership with Music Network, Lime Tree Theatre, Belltable, and Limerick Arts Office, supported by The Heritage Council.
With free tuition from professional musicians, people are invited to pick up instruments they used to play and connect and learn with others through traditional Irish music.
Participants will receive tuition on accordion, fiddle, and bodhrán with renowned musicians Derek Hickey (accordion), Tara Breen (fiddle), and Tommy Hayes (bodhrán).
The residency will consist of eight one-to-one lessons and three group lessons. At the end of the project, the group will perform three large ensemble sessions.
After the music, people will have an opportunity to chat over coffee about their musical progress.
Applications for the teaching residency, which will run from June 17 to September 16, are now open.
Applicants must be aged 60 or over and have previous experience on one of the listed instruments. Reading music is not essential.
The project will be based at the Lime Tree Theatre in Mary Immaculate College and the Belltable on 69 O’Connell Street.
Places are limited to 15 and priority will be given on a first come first served basis.
Participants must be available on all project dates; a full list of dates is available on Music Network’s website. More information is available on the website or by calling Claire Austen on 083 095 5956.
The closing date for applications is 2pm on Friday, June 5.
