THE safety of young children is at risk as horses are allowed to roam and run through a built up housing estate in Limerick, a worried mother has claimed.
She told the Limerick Post that the response from the local authorities in trying to contain the horses is “farcical and ridiculous”.
Speaking on the basis of anonymity, the mother of three said she has had to make alterations to her property to ensure the safety of her children.
“I bought my house from plans, at great expense and it was supposed to be a Cul de Sac, but we are waiting 12 years for that. Now it is just a route through to the next estate and the horses are loose.
“Everyone from the planning department to the county council and authorities have said it is not their responsibility”.
She explained that fields back on to the houses of the estate at Glendale, adjacent to her home in Glenbrook on the Old Singland Road and these are used to keep the horses.
“Last Saturday night I could see four horses roaming around the road just outside my house – this is very dangerous for our children and any children in the estate who are just out playing. It’s farcical as everyone I try to speak to say that it is not their responsibility.
“These horses were confiscated before, but they have reappeared recently and I have had enough. It’s going on for months.
A spokesperson from Limerick County Council said they are monitoring the area and “any stray or loose horses will be picked up”.
The Council seized and detained 80 stray horses in the first quarter of this year at a cost of over €35,000. In 2011 and 2012, over half a million euro was spent on rounding up horses and holding them at a private pound in Cork for a minimum of five days pending reclamation by their owners.
