Teenager deemed fit for trial at Circuit Criminal Court

A SIXTEEN year old teenager has been deemed ‘mature’ enough to face trial at Limerick Circuit Court on allegations of robbery from an adult male earlier this year.

At a sitting of the Children’s Court, Judge Eugene O’Kelly heard an application by the State to have the matter sent forward for trial to the higher court given the nature and seriousness of teh offence.

it is alleged that the teenager was one of two youths aged 16 involved in the robbery of a man of his mobile phone and a small amount of cash.

The adult victim suffered a serious injury to the jaw in the attack last April.

Judge Eugene O’Kelly was told that the accused, who was known to gardai, had a “criminal maturity” and “was well aware of the crime he is alleged to have committed” according the Sgt Donal Cronin.

The court accepted the evidence of the State and deemed that the application of the DPP suitable to have the boy sent forward to the Criminal Circuit Court for trial on indictment.

The teen was remanded on continuing bail on the allegations dating back to last April and must adhere to strict conditions in the interim.
