Limerick shoppers were also being advised by retailers at the points of purchase that cards were being either declined or unable to be processed because of the glitch in the system.

However AIB said the payment limit of €600 has been reset for non AIB ATM machines and that all other issues are rectified.

Furious customers took to social media in the run up to Christmas to vent their anger at the banking giant.

On Friday, Bank of Ireland experienced difficulties with a payment file and this was reflected on to the cards of some customers. It is unknown how many were affected.

This comes in the wake of the Ulster Bank fiasco where they have had four major technology failures since last Summer where the latest came a number of weeks ago.

Officials from all three banks have said that all issues are resolved.
