LIMERICK local authorities will get a boost to the funding they get from government to the tune of almost €6 million next year.

Environment Minister Phil Hogan has announced General Purpose Grants of €14,625,159 to the Limerick local authorities for 2014. When taken with the water costs of some €31,226,411 that will be transferred from the local authorities to Irish Water, this represents a funding boost of €5,964,879 and a 15 per cent increase over the 2013 figures.

Local authority financing will radically change in 2014 when Irish Water will assume responsibility for the delivery and funding of water services, the Local Property Tax will operate on a full year basis and the Non Principal Private Residence Charge will be discontinued.
