A LIMERICK woman has been rescued from her semi submerged car off the north Kerry Coast after she took a wrong turn and ended up in the sea.

The woman, who had been in Kerry near Ballylongford, was visiting friends at the time when she took a wrong turn during the bad weather on Thursday night shortly after 7pm.

It is understood that the car in which she was driving became submerged on the shoreline area leaving the woman trapped inside.

The Shannon based Coast Guard rescue helicopter R115 was scrambled to the scene and rescuers from the Ballybunion Sea and Cliff Rescue Service sought to free her when the alert was raised.

The car became submerged at the shoreline at Clounamon near Asdee and the woman, when freed, was understood to be suffering from shock and hypothermia.

She was transferred to the University Hospital Limerick for treatment but is expected to make a full recovery.

Meanwhile, flooding has caused havoc and extensive damage in both city and county.

Main Street in Foynes was blocked due to heavy rains and tide flooding the area.

Homes and businesses in the area were flooded while extensive water damage took its toll at City Hall leaving the offices of Limerick District Court submerged in up to two feet of water.

The Friday sitting of the district court was transferred to the Merchants Quay building normally used for the circuit court as it escaped damage.

A weather warning remains in place while forecasters expect the wet and windy conditions to subside over the coming days.
