Red Ribbon recognised for HIV activism role

RRP GALA AwardLIMERICK’S Red Ribbon Project has been named HIV Campaigner of the Year in recognition of its work in HIV activism.

The Davis Street-based organisation was established in 1989 to provide education, training and support around the areas of gender, orientation, sexual health and HIV/ Aids. At last week’s Gay and Lesbian (GALA) Awards, the Red Ribbon Project scooped the Noel Walsh HIV Campaigner of the Year Award.

The group was honoured for its dedication to HIV activism over the past 25 years. The Mid-West charity is currently running a campaign titled ‘Everyone has an HIV status – do you know yours?’ by providing rapid HIV testing in the community.

Manager of Red Ribbon Project, Ann Mason, said she was very honoured to receive the Noel Walsh HIV activism GALA award in recognition of their work in this area.

“Red Ribbon worked closely with Noel Walsh, after whom the award is named, before his untimely death in 2008, and we are proud to continue the important anti-stigma work he started,” she said.
