A new exhibition of hand-crafted miniature dioramas celebrating Limerick’s local businesses opens at Lucky Lane this month, and it has already captured imaginations well beyond the city.

Little Limerick – Building Small Businesses, which runs at Lucky Lane from Thursday May 15 to Friday June 12, features shoebox-sized recreations of instantly recognisable local shopfronts, created by Limerick miniature artist Dean Sarsfield. The pieces have already garnered an enthusiastic following online before the exhibition has even opened, with Sarsfield’s Instagram attracting considerable attention for his meticulous, affectionate portrayals of city life in miniature.

The dioramas capture not only the architecture and signage of their subjects, but also the humour, imperfections and lived-in character that make independent businesses so distinctive. Rather than idealised versions of familiar facades, Sarsfield deliberately preserves the slightly scruffy details and visual quirks that give each place its personality. Among the businesses recreated are Tom Collins Bar, the Chicken Hut and Lucky Lane itself.

The exhibition came about after Lucky Lane owner David Irwin discovered Sarsfield’s work online. “As soon as I saw them, I knew we had to have one for Lucky Lane,” he said. “There’s something about seeing the world in miniature that gives you a sort of different perspective on life.”
