Limerick bikers show milk of human kindness

bloodBikegroupBLOOD Bike Mid West, a life-saving charity service transporting urgently needed blood, blood products, drugs and breast milk between hospitals for premature and ill babies, is looking for new recruits.

This Saturday, August 16 from 11am to 3pm,  Blood Bike Mid West will be holding a recruitment drive in the Great National South Court Hotel.

Since being established in October 2012, Blood Bike Mid West has made a vital contribution in getting milk to premature babies quickly.

Milk Bank manager Ann McCrea explained, “Milk can now be delivered seven days a week and to all parts of Ireland. Milk travelling in this way, reaches the tiny babies faster than any other way, and often travels with a relay of blood bikers to get the milk to the tiny babies at speed.”

Blood bikers now operate a regular rota at weekends at the University Maternity Hospital Limerick transporting documentation and records to and from the University Hospital Limerick. They also ride regularly to Athlone to collect urgently needed breast milk for premature babies.
