From Iron Age to the Easter Rising – Lughnasa

RELIVE the excitement and skills and traditions of the Iron Age right up to the War of Independence at Craggaunowen this August holiday weekend with re-enactors in costume. You too can take part in a special ‘Lughnasa’ celebration organised by Shannon Heritage at this visitor attraction near Quin in Co. Clare.

“Shannon Heritage is delighted to offer visitors to Craggaunowen the opportunity to celebrate ‘Lughnasa’ in style on Sunday August 2 and Monday 3 from 11am to 5pm each day,” explains chief executive John Ruddle. “The ancient pagan festival of ‘Lughnasa’ marks the first day of autumn and the start of the harvest season. The event will be staged by Claíomh Living History Group whose members have many years of experience as historical interpreters and living history specialists.”

Claíomh Living History Group will give visitors a unique glimpse of what living conditions were like for Hiberno-Norse families living in a Crannóg. On display will be a range of replica Viking Age clothing, artefacts and weapons.

Expect a showcase of events from different time periods including a display of the material culture of the 1916 era and the Irish Volunteers such samples of everyday items such as ceramics, glassware, leather accoutrements, uniforms, paperwork, coinage and weaponry.

Early Christian and Tudor eras will feature, their 15th and 16th century military technologies and methods with a display of reconstructed clothing, arms and armour. A programme is on site and to view at www.shannonheritage.com; family of four is €21.50 and two adults, six children is €24.50.
