A furniture store in the county Limerick village of Dromkeen, that was once one of Ireland’s top dancehalls, has been destroyed by fire.

The fire at the Furniture Man store, previously known as the Oyster Ballroom, broke out in the early hours of Sunday morning, resulting in the complete destruction of the building and around €500,000 worth of stock.

Eight units of the Limerick City and County Fire service were on the scene shortly after the alarm was raised at 3.30am and the smouldering ruin was still being dampened down at 11am on Sunday.

The main Limerick/Tipperary road was closed in both directions with Gardaí putting diversions in place.
