Stricken boat towed to safety on Abbey River

THE sole occupant of a boat, adrift on the Abbey River this Thursday evening has been rescued and brought to safety after the alarm was raised shortly after 6pm.

The alarm was raised at 6:15pm when a call came into Limerick fire and rescue service that a boat with one male on board was drifting down the Abbey River.

Three units of the fireservice and the fire service boat “fire swift” were on scene and tended to the stricken vessel.

The man was transferred to the fire service boat and the drifting boat towed to safety.

Boat owners and leisure craft users are reminded to check their equipment and ensure all safety measures are in place ahead of taking to the water.
