THERE is an invitation to an auspicious occasion for citizens of Limerick who recall the glory days of the Old Limerick Journal – and perhaps the fall out from 1916.

On Tuesday March 1 next, 7pm at City Library, the Granary in Michael Street, the ‘Old Limerick Journal 1916 Commemorative Edition’ will be launched by Mairéad Dore, daughter of Éamon de hOir who fought in the GPO for the Easter Rising.

Although an annual OLJ does emerge each Christmas, this special edition will run to 170 illustrated pages and “examines society in Limerick at the time and the lives of Limerick people in 1916”.

From Mr Des Ryan, a long standing contributor: “There have been numerous books written about the rebellion, mainly dealing with the events in Dublin in Easter Week. The fact that such a large amount of material could be sourced about Limerick in 1916 made the task of the many contributors a little easier”.

Editor Tom Donovan makes the observation that this centenary issue will “be payback to all our loyal readers and will make our publication, giving a local perspective on 1916, more accessible to the interested reader”.
