FRIARS’ Gate in Kilmallock offers any amount of variety in its seasonal programme, with the Coen Brothers’ most recent, ‘Hail, Ceasar!’ screening on Wednesday 14 at 8pm.

It features an all star cast centred by George Clooney playing a mutton chop matinée idol, Baird Whitlock.

Less generic is their Culture Night plan for Friday 16. Under the banner of ‘Chapter and Verse’, we are invited to “an eclectic mix of writings plus song, a night of prose, poetry and music. Budding and established writers are invited to share their work in a relaxed atmosphere”.

Writer and workshop facilitator Sheila Quealy leads and each presentation is capped at 7mins tops. From 8pm.

The visual art narrative belongs to Maurice Quillinan, for all of September.  ‘Choruses from the Rock’ is his show of paintings and drawings inspired by travels in China. Pictured here, ‘Summer wind: Anse Mejan’, oil on linen.
