THE strength and community spirit of the Thomondgate community has never been more evident than during the difficult weeks following the murder of popular local resident Rose Hanrahan.

That’s according to neighbour and local councillor for City North, John Costelloe who praised the response of the local community following the elderly widow’s violent death on December 15.

Speaking at last Saturday night’s candlelight vigil in Thomondgate for the 78-year-old Limerick woman, the Sinn Fein representative said it was heartwarming to see so many neighbours and friends in attendance at the memorial service.

Having known Rose for more than 20 years, I think she would have been touched to see so many members of her community united together here tonight. Although the hurt and fear are still palpable, the strength and community spirit of the Thomondgate area has never been more evident than during these past difficult weeks.

“Neighbours have been checking on neighbours and the local people have been especially supportive of the wider Hanrahan family,” Cllr Costelloe told the Limerick Post.

He also noted the welcome presence of members of the Garda Siochana at Saturday night’s vigil and mass.

“This is a visual representation of their commitment to bringing the perpetrators of this vile murder to justice. From the moment news of this tragedy came through the local Gardaí have been fantastic in their response.

“From speaking to local residents, I know the local community Garda has been reassuringly visible throughout the period. The Gardaí have provided reassurance and assistance to other residents who have raised safety concerns since the incident,” he said.

Cllr Costelloe again appealed to any one who feels they may have information to bring this to the attention of the Gardaí.

He also reechoed the comments of Canon Donal McNamara who said, “The people of the New Road and Thomondgate want justice for Rose and the apprehension of her murderers.”
