Historic Island Swim returns with largest number of swimmers yet

THIS Saturday, September 7 will see over 65 swimmers taking part in The Island Swim.

This historic swim consists of a 3.8k route around Kings Island, with participants swimming up The Abbey River, Under Baals Bridge, around the back of St Mary’s Park and back in under Thomond Bridge.

Event Director Mark Dempsey says this year is even more poignant for this scenic event “This is our first year without the long serving limerick swimming coach John Dempsey but it will also be his birthday so it will be a very special day” he said.

The swim starts at 1pm and finishes at 3pm from the Curraghour Boat Club, Merchants Quay with refreshments served afterwards in The Cauldron Bar, Nicholas Street.

“This swim is by invite only and we have reached capacity with over 65 swimmers this years. It’s a wonderful way to showcase our city and we want as many people to come out and cheer on the swimmers on the day” said Dempsey.
