Update: GardaĆ­ investigation underway after boy found dead in Limerick

A MAJOR Garda investigation is underway after the body of a boy was discovered in a house in Limerick City tonight.

The boy, believed to be aged 11 years old, was found with multiple injuries according to a reliable Garda source. It is understood the boy was fatally assaulted.

A man in his late 20s has been arrested by gardai in connection with the boy’s death.

Sources said the boy and the man were well known to one another.

GardaĆ­ are at the scene on the Shanabooly Road, Ballynanty.

A Garda spokesman confirmed GardaĆ­ Ā ā€œarrested a man in his 20s following a fatal assault in Limerickā€.

ā€œShortly afterĀ 7pmĀ GardaĆ­ discovered a body of a boy at a house in the Ballynanty area of Limerick City. He was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later,ā€ they said.

ā€œGardaĆ­ are investigating all of the circumstances of his death.ā€

ā€œFollowing the discovery a man in his late 20s was arrested by investigating GardaĆ­. He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act,Ā 1984 at Henry StreetĀ Garda Station.ā€

ā€œThe scene is preserved for a forensic and technical examination and the services of both the Office of the State Pathologist and Garda Technical Bureau have been requested.ā€

ā€œThe investigation is ongoing.ā€

Update 11:24pm:

Garda sources said the boy’s body will remain at the house overnight.

The state pathologist will carry out a preliminary examination of the body at the house on Monday morning.
