The new Limerick United group led by Conn Murray has been forced into a name change due to the threat of legal action from Limerick FC and will now be known as Treaty United.
‘Limerick United’ had been accepted into all underage Airtricity Leagues for the 2020 season as well as the Contintal Tyres Women’s League and U-17s league. Today’s name change will have no affect on the participation of the group in next season’s leagues.
Two weeks ago, Limerick FC entered into legal proceedings against the Football Association of Ireland due to their failure to invite Limerick FC to participate in the league.
Also, owner Pat O’Sullivan revealed that significant investment had been secured to save the future of Limerick senior soccer and urged the new Limerick United group to join forces with his existing entity following the FAI’s decision to allow Limerick FC to apply for a First Division licence.
However, as of last week, O’Sullivan confirmed to Sporting Limerick that there had been no contact between both groups.
Mr Murray re-iterated that there had been no contact between both parties save for the threat of legal action by Limerick FC if Murray’s group persisted with the name Limerick United.
The threat of legal proceedings is in relation to a little known fact that the Limerick United name had been registered over a decade ago. As a result, the new group could not legally use the name due to copyright.
