End of an Era as Mari Hussey bids farewell to Mari’s Cheese Shop

Mari Hussey

SO it’s the end of an era this weekend as Mari’s Cheese Shop, one of the longest
established businesses in the Milk Market, changes hands.

Mari Hussey, who has been serving up coffee, breads, cheese, olives and cakes with her own unique flair for almost thirty years, is moving on. Having hosted numerous gigs, exhibitions, readings and a vibrant atmosphere, Mari’s Cheese Shop has always been a destination for artists and art lovers alike as well as those who enjoy good food.

It’s difficult to mark this occasion fully in the pandemic so Marie commissioned her
friend, musician and theatre maker Ann Blake, to record a version of one her favourite
Leonard Cohen songs, ‘Passing Through’, and put it with a collection of photographs
and videos from her childhood and years of running the shop in the market.

She said the song captures the spirit of the nature of people passing through the shop and also passing through each other’s lives.

While Mari’s Cheese Shop will continue to trade, Mari herself will no longer be behind
the counter.
