Limerick drivers asked to switch off engines when cars are stopped

Traffic congestion has been identified as a major cause of nitrogen dioxide.

LIMERICK City and County Council is running a five day social media campaign to encourage drivers not to keep their engines running when their cars are stopped.

Please Don’t Idle, (your car engine), is the message from Limerick City and County Council to drivers across Limerick as it marks National Energy Savings Week.

The campaign, which started today across the council’s @limerickenviron Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts, aims to highlight environmental benefits such as healthier air and energy savings.

Welcoming the campaign Mayor Daniel Butler said: “Not idling your car’s engine is a simple climate action that all drivers can undertake. There is no point in burning fuel to stand still. A running car engine emits CO2 and we are all aware that this is bad for our environment, our health, our pocket. It can even impact on personal safety as it is harder to hear cars that are moving.”

Environment Awareness Officer Sinead Mc Donnell said the aim of the social media campaign is to remind drivers to switch off their engines when their cars are stationary.”

“In a nutshell, the message is simple – if you are parked up, please do not leave your car engine running”.
