World’s Largest Flywheel – How Moneypoint is leading the world in increasing renewable penetration on electrical grids

The delivery and installation of the world’s largest flywheel at Moneypoint, Co Clare is set to be discussed at a free online webinar hosted by Engineers Ireland’s Thomond Region on Tuesday, 5 April 2022.

The Synchronous Condenser is a key component of the ESB’s Green Atlantic @ Moneypoint project and will be the first in the country to incorporate the world’s largest flywheel used for grid stability. The flywheel will be supplied by Siemens Energy to the ESB to support their ambitious plan to transform the Clare site into a green energy hub for a range of renewable technologies.

John Coleman, Chair of the Thomond Region Committee said: “Engineers Ireland Thomond Region is delighted to highlight this world class project involving pioneering technology which is part of ESB’s plan to transform its Moneypoint site in Co Clare on the west coast of Ireland into a green energy hub. The Synchronous Condenser will be the largest of its kind in the world. Its construction is of vital strategic importance for both the Midwest and nationally in helping Ireland to become a leader in green energy production and its stable integration across the Grid. We would encourage all those who are interested in the engineering sector to tune in to the free webinar to gain a unique insight into the proposed development.”

About our speakers:

Ralph Morgenstern is a Senior Sales Manager for Grid Stabilization including flexible alternating current transmission systems at Siemens Energy and is the Country Coordinator for Ireland and the UK for grid stabilization projects. He has more than 20 years experience with Siemens in high voltage and flexible alternating current transmission system projects. He acts as an interface from Ireland and the UK to the HQ of Siemens Energy in Germany in all technical aspects of grid stabilization projects.

Seamus Howard is the Head of Grid Stabilization for Siemens Energy Ireland. He has worked in various roles with multiple technologies in the energy sector for the last 12 years.
As part of the Siemens Energy Ireland Executive team, he collaborates with other Business Unit leaders, developing projects contributing towards Ireland’s Net Zero goals.
