    ROUTE options are now being considered for a Shannon Greenway cycle and walkway route connecting Scariff to Limerick City.

    And, according to Clare Fine Gael TD Joe Carey, it is essential that local communities, landowners and other stakeholders make their views known at this stage of the process.

    This follows the completion of a feasibility and constraints report by a working group which includes representatives from Waterways Ireland, Clare County Council and Limerick City and County Council.

    One of the issues being considered is whether public lands between Limerick and Scariff, especially the towpaths of the Park and Erinagh Canals and various ESB embankments, could be used for the project.

    “The success of this project will depend on the level of public engagement to take account of local knowledge and preferences. It is essential that the Greenway is regarded as a community asset as much as a significant visitor attraction,” Deputy Carey explained.

    “I would strongly encourage local people to attend a series of public consultation events which will be held in Scariff, Killaloe, Ogonnelloe, Clonlara and Castletroy over the coming weeks.

    Dates and locations for the consultation sessions are:

    April 26: Waterways Ireland Office Scariff;

    April 27: Killaloe Spa Hotel;

    April 28: Ogonnelloe Community Centre;

    May 4: Clonlara Community Centre;

    May 5: Kilmurry Lodge Hotel, Castletroy.

    All sessions are scheduled to begin at 5pm and end at 8pm.
