County Limerick man dies after weekend assault

The late Dylan McCarthy

A 29 year-old County Limerick man who was seriously injured in an assault in Monasterevin at the weekend died in Tallaght University Hospital this (Monday) afternoon.

Dylan McCarthy from Kilmallock was found unresponsive outside a pub in the County Kildare town shortly after 12.30am on Sunday.

It is understood that up to ten people were involved in an incident during which Dylan was assaulted.  His father Eamonn, who is in his late 50s, was also attacked and remains in a serious condition in Tallaght Hospital.

Members of the McCarthy family, who were in Monasterevin to celebrate the birth of a baby, were socialising in a pub on Dublin Street, Monasterevin, when a dispute broke out just after midnight.

The dispute escalated and spilled out on to the street, where Dylan McCarthy was struck by several people and lost consciousness. Gardaí and paramedics were called and Mr McCarthy was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital with serious head injuries.

Investigating Gardaí have gathered CCTV footage from the area and also contacted other people who were on the scene when the dispute broke out.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward and for those with dashcam footage to make it available at Kildare Town Garda station. As the incident occurred on the street, investigating gardai believe dashcam footage recorded by drivers on Dublin Street between 12.15am and 12.45am on Sunday may prove crucial.
