Limerick man with 185 convictions refused bail

Limerick District Court.

A JUDGE has refused bail to a Limerick man who has 185 previous court convictions, 48 of them for offences committed while on bail.

Noel Franklin (36) with an address at Mount Kenneth, Limerick City, was before Limerick District court on allegations of theft this week.

The court heard that he has been the subject of 18 bench warrants for his arrest.

After Gardaí objected to bail, Mr Franklin’s solicitor told Judge Carol Ann Coolican that her client had been in court the previous day on other matters and there was no objection to bail then.

But Judge Coolican said “that these are serious matters. ”

She also noted the number of previous convictions and the number of those convictions which were for charges arising during times that the court had given him bail.

“I’m not satisfied that he should be released from custody,” she said.

Judge Coolican remanded the accused man to appear again on this Tuesday, January 10, while the court awaits directions on the charges from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
