Limerick councillors heading Stateside for St Patrick’s Day

Mayor Francis Foley will be flying the Limerick flag in New York.

DELEGATIONS from Limerick City and County Council will be celebrating Ireland’s national holiday in the US next month at an estimated cost of up to €3,000 a head.

Mayor Francis Foley will lead a Limerick delegation at the St Patrick’s Day parade in New York and Limerick City and County Council see it as an ideal opportunity to develop further transatlantic links.

“It is hoped that the creation of further links will bring additional benefits in the areas of tourism, culture, community and economic development,” senior executive officer Laura Flannery explained.

“There will be a significant gathering of business and community leaders in New York around this time and it is hoped to build on the linkages already developed across a wide variety of agencies to promote Limerick as an ideal location for development and future investment.

“The Mayor and councillors will meet with a number of local business and tourism interests with a view to the promotion of Limerick as part of the itinerary, while there, and to build on the existing links developed during the visit of the Mayor in previous years.”

Mayor Foley has also been invited to attend the Annual Queens County St Patrick’s Day Parade at Rockaway Beach on March 4. This is the second largest St Patrick’s Day Parade in New York and gains significant exposure.

“It is important that every opportunity is taken to build on existing links with groups in the USA to promote Limerick in the areas of tourism, culture, community and economic development,” Ms Flannery said.

The council also plans to be represented at the St Patrick’s Day Parade in  Savannah, Georgia on March 17. It is the second largest parade in the world after New York City and this year marks its 198th anniversary.
