Limerick students make headlines at national media awards

STUDENTS from three Limerick colleges took home six of the top awards at the National Student Media Awards (SMEDIAS) last week.

University of Limerick (UL) took home the lion’s share of the awards with four, while Mary Immaculate College (MIC) and Limerick College of Further Education (LCFE) claimed one each.

The event, which took place at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, aims to honour the best young talent in Irish journalism.

UL’s CURIOUS magazine took home awards for Magazine of the Year and Layout and Design of the Year, under the editorship of Molly Cantwell.

The award for Feature Writer of the Year in Arts and Pop Culture went to Aislinn Kelly (UL), while Rachel Petticrew (UL) took home the award for Journalism relating to Health.

LCFE student Alexandra Moloney took home the Virgin Media Belonging Award, while MIC students Darragh Dolan and Jake O’Loughlin won the award for Radio DJ of the Year.

The SMEDIAS, now in their 23rd year, are known as “the Oscars for students” with students from Limerick colleges receiving a total of 17 nominations in this year’s event.
