IN-FORM Sarah Lavin (Emerald Athletics Club) is a live contender for a medal at the European Games, which commenced in Krakow on Wednesday and will continue through in the Polish city until July 2.

The Lisnagry 100m hurdler cruised through her opening race at the European Athletics Team Championship, which is being held as part of this year’s European Games, posting a superb 12.82, the second fastest of her career.

โ€œIt was a really good performance,โ€ she said afterwards. โ€œI tried to treat it like round one of a championship. 12.82 is a good run at any time of the day.โ€

The Emerald athlete represents possibly Irelandโ€™s best chance of a medal at the Championship.

A full-time professional for the past couple of years, on the competitiveness of the sport she commented: โ€œItโ€™s a ruthless game of literally hundredths of seconds and if youโ€™re standing on your feet and itโ€™s costing you one or two hundredths, it matters – if it costs you half a second, you might as well not be showing up.โ€

She added: โ€œYou have to trust you have the right people around you and Iโ€™m lucky to have that. I want to make Paris (venue 2024โ€™s Olympic Games) the best I can do, and these Indoors and the Worlds in August will be a strong build-up to it.

โ€œThis is my time now.โ€

The final of the Womenโ€™s 100m Hurdles is Saturday afternoon.
