Thinking about retrofitting your home?

BUILDINGS are responsible for approximately 40 per cent of EU energy consumption and 36 per cent of the energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. In Europe, 75 per cent of buildings are not energy efficient, while about 85 to 95 per cent of today’s buildings will still in use by 2050.
That’s according to MEP Sean Kelly, who is organising an upcoming event in Limerick aimed at the promotion of retrofitting across Ireland.
“Ireland currently has around 1.7 million occupied homes, consuming about a quarter of the nation’s energy, as well as being responsible for 29 per cent of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions,” the MEP says.

“There is a strong potential for sustainable home renovations in Ireland, which will reduce energy bills for consumers and help us meet our climate and energy targets. We have a strong decarbonisation target for the residential sector, with the ambition to retrofit almost 30 per cent of the residential housing stock (500,000 homes) and install over 400,000 heat pumps.

“In line with my work on the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), I am delighted to host a public event entitled ‘Retrofitting Ireland: Building resilience in Irish homes’ in the University of Limerick on Friday the 28th of July at 10am.”
