BANK of Ireland (BOI) have issued a firm warning after noting a stark 25 per cent increase in ‘Hi Mum/Dad’ text scams across the month of July.

According to BOI, the scams have increased in tandem with holiday season, when more family members are likely to be holidaying abroad.

The scam involves fraudsters sending messages purporting to be from a family member in an attempt to collect personal bank card or online banking details.

Advice from BOI says not to respond to such text scams or follow links provided, and instead simply call the child or family member on their usual phone number for direct confirmation.

Those who believe they may have been a victim of such scams can call BOI on 1800 946 764.
