Post-mortem investigation today into Newcastle West death

GARDAÍ are awaiting the results of a post-mortem into the death of a woman, who has been named locally, who died at a home in Newcastle West on Monday evening.

The body of Catherine ‘Ca’ McCarthy Atkinson, of Newcastle West, was discovered in a home in the Templegreen area by Gardaí at around 5.10pm on Monday evening, sparking an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

A postmortem was due to begin this morning at 10am and Gardaí will await the results of that examination to determine the cause of the death of Ms McCarthy Atkinson, who was in her 50s.

Mourners paying tribute to the late Newcastle West woman said she was a “lovely woman” who “never had a bad word to say about anyone” and “always looked out for everyone” in her area.

According to a statement from An Garda Síochána, the scene was preserved for technical examination.

The results of the State Pathologist’s examination will determine whether the matter warrants a Garda investigation.
