AN HISTORIC city centre building could be due to get a new lease of life if a planning application before Limerick City and County Council is granted.

The GAFF have applied to the local authority for permission to create a theatre and rehearsal space at the old Tait clothing factory on Lord Edward Street.

The group hopes to turn the protected building into a theatre rehearsal hub which would include the closing up of some windows and the formation of new window openings, new doorways, signage, and an entrance canopy.

The works would also include the demolition of the dividing wall to the adjoining yard and the construction of a sheltered external area, as well as new solar panels to be fitted to the roof.

The GAFF is a voluntary community arts group that facilitates a link between artists, communities, and the wider public.

The GAFF had previously applied for planning for the Lord Edward Street site but had to resubmit it as council planners deemed the application to be invalid.

The group was previously running out of a site on Cecil Street.

Limerick City and County Council are the owners of the former Tait clothing factory and have previously given their permission for the GAFF to seek planning permission for the site.

The Tait Clothing Factory was opened by former mayor Peter Tait in 1853.

The factory operated until 1975, when it closed its doors for the last time.

A decision on the GAFF’s planning application is due in October.
