Regional United eliminated nine-time winners Fairview Rangers from the FAI Junior Cup following a dramatic 6-5 penalty shoot-out win after the sides had failed to produce a goal through either normal or extra-time.

Seán Russell’s outfit are now among the lead fancies for outright glory.

Pike Rovers are also through to the last 16, with penalties (8-7) again necessary for the victory at Castlebar Celtic (Mayo). The teams were deadlocked at 2-2 after 90 minutes and another 30 minutes failed to break the stalemate.

Heroic Pike goalkeeper Gary Neville both stopped and scored a penalty.

Askeaton-Kilcornan also progressed at the expense of Drinagh Rangers (Cork).

Limerick’s other representatives – Charleville, Hyde Ranagers, and Rathkeale – exited at the weekend.

In the Munster Junior Cup, Richie Burke-managed Mungret Regional stunned FAI Cup champions Newmarket Celtic, 2-1.

Both Mungret goals came courtesy of the outstanding Kieran Long.

In the Oscar Traynor, fancied Limerick, under the joint management of Paul Danaher and John Lysaght, are away to Kerry on Saturday evening.
