Homelessness crisis ‘beggars belief’ says Limerick councillor

Labour Party Councillor Conor Sheehan

LABOUR Party councillor Conor Sheehan has condemned the latest record homeless figures in Ireland, which reveal a distressing and unrelenting surge in homelessness.

According to latest figures, there are now 122 dependent children and 406 adults in homelessness in the Mid-West.

City North representative Conor Sheehan takes the view that the scale of the permanent homelessness crisis “beggars belief”.

“It’s unconscionable that under this Government, the number of homeless children has nearly doubled. We’re witnessing an utterly unacceptable failure to protect the most vulnerable in our society,” he told the Limerick Post.

“Knocking on doors in Limerick City North, housing is the number one issue that I am hearing from families. Adults forced to live in their childhood bedrooms, children living in overcrowded homes, and the relentless number of notice to quits that I am dealing with as a councillor – there is no let up in this housing disaster.

“Whether it’s a lack of ambition or capacity, this Government demonstrates an appalling lack of urgency in implementing the necessary measures to combat homelessness. This chronic disregard exacerbates the suffering of those 13,179 individuals grappling with homelessness, those teetering on the brink, marginalised communities, and the innocent children who continue to be left behind.”

Cllr Sheehan went on to say that the fact that there are now 122 dependent children and 406 adults in homelessness in the Mid West should jolt the Government into action.

“But it does not. It’s time for Government to act decisively. The abject failure to safeguard those on the sharp edge of the housing crisis is emblematic of this Government’s negligence in confronting the pressing civil rights issue of our generation,” he concluded.
