Limerick links to London SHC Final

THERE was strong Limerick involvement in the 0-17 to 0-13 win by Brothers Pearse against Robert Emmets in the London Senior Hurling Championship Final at McGovern Park, Ruislip.

The side was jointly-captained by Stephen Frawley of Ballybricken/Bohermore, for whom injury limited his participation.

On the starting blocks were impressive Mike Noonan (Adare) in goal and talented Blackrock brothers Daithí and Fionn Heffernan, at six and 15, respectively. Their dad Pat, Limerick’s full-forward star of the 1990s, was reserve goalkeeper.

The management included Effin native Jerry Rea, who famously captained London against Limerick – whose team included his own late brother Ned (Éamonn) – in a closely fought All-Ireland Championship quarter-final at Cusack Park, Ennis in the then breakthrough season of 1973.

Rea’s son John Paul was a selector.
