‘Put your whistle where your mouth is’: Patsy Coffey on referee shortage

Michael Browne (Dromcollogher Broadford) receives his County Final Championship medal from Chairman Wayne Fitzgerald.

IN THE wake of a severe referee shortage in the GAA, a local call has been made for more to take up the whistle.

Limerick GAA is about to host a foundation course for new entrants, in an effort to address the decreasing numbers of referees in the association.

Officials locally have expressed concern at the declining number of such officials in the county and at the group’s ageing profile.

“Put your whistle where your mouth is,” commented local referee co-ordinator Patsy Coffey of Cappamore.

On the inter-county front, Limerick is well-served but on the club scene there is a serious lack of referees.

A shortage of referees is a real threat to the stability of fixtures – a couple of thousand, across all codes and levels, in the case of Limerick – nationwide in 2024.

More information on the upcoming foundation course is available through local clubs or through referee co-ordinator Patsy Coffey on 087 916 0344.
