Local councillor calls for additional funding for older persons grants

Fine Gael councillor Sarah Kiely

FINE Gael councillor Sarah Kiely urged the Council to give consideration to the provision of additional resources to address the processing time for Housing Adaptation Grants, Mobility Aid Grants, and Housing Aid for Older People Grants in the Metropolitan District.

Limerick City and County Council, she was informed, receives an annual budget for private grants from the Department of Housing.

In recent years, the local authority received an initial grant award of €3.8m.

“Should the Council receive a significantly higher volume of applications, a request can be made for additional funding to the Department,” Mary Hayes of the Council’s Housing Support Services explained.

The 2023 grant approvals to date, she said, represents a 12 per cent increase on the full year approval for 2022.
