ARDSCOIL Rís recovered superbly from ten points behind to squeeze past Castletroy College in the Munster Schools Boys Senior Cup at Liam Fitzgerald Park (Thomond RFC).

Castletroy opened the scoring with a try from prop Alister Tchokotieu, which was converted by fullback Liam Glynn.

Castletroy extended their lead to 10-0 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the first half when Glynn knocked over a penalty.

Ardscoil put some much needed points on the board before half-time when out-half Aaron Byrnes notched a penalty to reduce the deficit to 10-3 at the interval.

Ardscoil had a fast start to the second half when winger Daniel O’Connell crossed for his side’s opening try of the match but Byrnes’ conversion attempt was wide as Castletroy held on to their lead.

With just five minutes remaining, Byrnes was accurate with his next penalty attempt to push Ardscoil into a 10-11 lead.

Ardscoil next face Bandon Grammar School at Musgrave Park on January 24.

In the other opening round fixture, Glenstal Abbey easily beat Villiers at UL.

Tries for the winners came through Riain Concannon, Cillian O’Donovan, Oisín Rowan and Ben Tucker.

Rockwell College are next-up for Villiers on January 24.
