Councillor calls for government to reassess funding for housing aid grants

Limerick Labour Party councillor Joe Leddin.

LABOUR Party councillor Joe Leddin has called on the government to reassess the inadequate housing aid grants and housing adaptation grants issued to local councils.

Cllr Leddin said that “with limits of €30,000 for the housing adaptation grant to facilitate house extensions, and €8,000 for housing aid, families are left struggling to bridge the significant financial gap required for essential home upgrades”.

He added that “construction and material costs have risen significantly in recent years and many families or those with disabilities are left trying to borrow to enable essential works to be done to meet their housing needs.

The current housing grant limits are insufficient to meet the rising costs of home adaptations.”
