Fundraising goes to the dogs in Limerick

LIMERICK Greyhound Stadium will participate in a nationwide charity fundraising ‘Jerseys At The Dogs’ day on Saturday to coincide with the quarter-finals of the €150,000 Con and Annie Kirby Memorial Stake (7.40pm onwards).

To support the Dillon Quirke Foundation, fans are invited to wear their sports jerseys of choice and contribute to this noble cause.

Dillon was just 24 when he collapsed during a hurling match and died of Sudden Adult Death Syndrome in summer 2022 at Semple Stadium, Thurles. The foundation was subsequently established by Dillon’s family – his parents Dan and Hazel and sisters Shannon and Kellie – with the aim of funding widespread cardiac screening for young people involved in sport.

“We are thrilled to see ‘Jerseys At The Dogs’ return for its second year,” said Dan Quirke.

“Last year’s event was a tremendous success (raising €10,000), and we are grateful for the ongoing support from greyhound stadia and sports fans nationwide.

“We’re excited to build upon the success of last year’s event,” added Tim Lucey, Greyhound Racing Ireland.

“The enthusiasm and generosity shown by fans last year were inspiring and we look forward to another important event in support of the Dillon Quirke Foundation.

“Together, we can make an even greater impact and carry forward Dillon’s legacy, which will ultimately benefit all children who play sport across Ireland.”

Just 24 entrants now remain, meanwhile, in the Kirby stake.

In the second round, the biggest shock was the elimination of Liam Dowling’s track record holder Ballymac Danica. The quickest run for the 525-yard trip was that of Epic Chick for John Kennedy of Thurles, nominated by Gerald Griffins GAA.
