31 new bus shelters given green light for funding in Limerick

31 NEW bus shelters are set to be built across Limerick throughout 2024 and 2025 after an allocation of €900,000 to Limerick City and County Council’s Active Travel team. 

The shelters are to be made possible by funding provided to the council by the National Transport Authority (NTA).

According to a statement from the council’s Active Travel department, 20 bus shelters are to be constructed in the county, with a further 11 earmarked for the metropolitan area.

Works on assessing the exact location for the new shelters is already underway, a spokesman for the Active Travel department confirmed.

According to the department, the shelters will be delivered according to municipal district.

In Adare-Rathkeale, shelters will be erected at Loughill, Shanagolden, Askeaton, Reens Pike, The Square in Rathkeale, Ballyneety, and Foynes.

The Newcastle West district will see shelters erected at Templeglantine, Newcastle West, and two shelters each at Devon Cross and Abbeyfeale.

Cappamore-Killmallock will welcome shelters at Knocklong, Galbally, Murroe, Ballylanders, Herbertstown, Cappamore, and Doon.

In the city, shelters will be erected at Caherdavin Church, O’Connell Avenue, New Road in Garryowen, Mulcair Road, Childers Road, Clancy’s Strand, Drombanna, Ballysimon Road, Dublin Road, and two in Castleconnell.

Welcoming the news, Mayor Gerald Mitchell said that “these shelters are a vital resource for many communities as people look to avail of enhanced local public transport services, in line with local and national transport policy.”

“Limerick is continuing to upgrade and enhance its transport infrastructure at a pace and a standard that is of the envy to many.”
