FIANNA Fáil local election candidate for City North Suzzie O’Deniyi has condemned the recent vandalism and theft of campaign posters across the constituency.
Several of the first-time campaigner’s posters and numerous other campaign materials have been defaced or stolen in what she described as a “disgusting and degrading act” by a very small minority of individuals.
“These actions are not just illegal but fundamentally undermine the democratic process. The use of military-style tactics and intimidation seeks to silence political expression and stifle healthy debate,” O’Deniyi told the Limerick Post this week.
“This behaviour does not represent the views or values of the people of Limerick, who are known for their respect for democracy and tolerance of diverse opinions.
“The vast majority of Limerick residents are respectful, law-abiding citizens who support fair and open elections,” she insisted.
Ms O’Deniyi also spoke out in recent weeks after campaigners on her team were accosted with racially motivated verbal abuse, which saw one man brought before the courts.
The Fianna Fáil hopeful strongly believes that the actions of a few should not overshadow the integrity and spirit of the community. She urged the people of Limerick to reject these acts of vandalism and to stand together in promoting a positive and respectful campaign environment, despite a number of nasty incidents experienced by candidates and campaigners in recent weeks.
“Women in particular have been targeted the most in this election, facing intimidation and harassment. We will not tolerate it. I will not tolerate it.”
She encourages all supporters and residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
“I am running a campaign focused on the needs and aspirations of our community,” she said.
”Our resolve is stronger than ever to represent the true voice of Limerick and ensure that respect, integrity, and democracy prevail.”
