Victorian post box makes its way from former prison island to Limerick City

Labour Councillor Joe Leddin welcomed the replacement post box for O'Connell Avenue.

THE return of a Victorian post box to Limerick City’s O’Connell Avenue has received a stamp of approval from Labour Party councillor Joe Leddin.

Cllr Leddin believes this is good news for the residents, business community, and local schools along O’Connell Avenue.

According to Cllr Leddin, the new box has been shipped up all the way from Cork’s Spike Island – also known as ‘Ireland’s Alcatraz’, the former Napoleonic era fortress became the first island prison in the mid 1600s during Cromwell’s assault, and was again used as a prison during the Great Famine.

The original box was destroyed by accident last year, leaving the local community without a post box.

“As a local councillor, I met many people and received several requests to try and ensure that a similar post box could be found as a suitable replacement,” Cllr Leddin told the Limerick Post.

“I have worked for many months to try and identify a suitable replacement post box and I wish to thank both Limerick Civic Trust, An Post, and Limerick City and County Council, who collectively have worked to deliver a replacement.

“A similar box has been identified that was originally in use in Spike Island in Cork and has now been transferred to An Post in the Dock Road to enable a new lock to be fitted prior to being painted. Once ready,  Limerick City and County Council will arrange to transfer and install in the original location over the next few weeks.”
